After migrating from a dedicated server to my new hosting over at www.mediatemple.net, I was looking for a easy to use but yet powerful tool to migrate my existing databases from my former host to the new one.
I was browsing the web, when I run over a tool called heidiSQL. I had a look at their webpage, and the tool looked very promising. I downloaded the latest version, and was surprised how easy and straight-forwarded it is to use. Especially the data restore worked very well. So if you’re looking for such a tool, grab your copy!

The new iPhone 3G to cost less then 100US$ to Apple?

According to the guys over at ispazio.net, the new iphone 3G (with GPS antenna and UMTS module) costs less then 100US$ to produce to Apple.
Therefore a sale price set at 199US$ would be fair, but you will get this price only with a new 2 years contract…
Crazy, imagine how much many the guys over at apple make….

problems sending emails using yahoo’s smtp server

I used yahoo’s smtp server (smtp.mail.yahoo.it) a long time for sending mails through Thunderbird, but recently it stopped working. I always received error messages that my mail was not relayed, but didn’t get a specific error code.
So, after looking around for a long time, I had to change my smt configuratin to the following:

smtp server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 465
Secure Connection: SSL
Username: Userid without @yahoo.it

And this works again.

[Postfix] – warning: mail_queue_enter: create file maildrop Permission denied

After trying to setup postgrey, I had a lot of warning messages in my mail.log file like this:

To get rid of this messages, I had to do the following:

root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# postfix check
postfix/postfix-script: warning: not owned by group postdrop: /var/spool/postfix/public
postfix/postfix-script: warning: not owned by group postdrop: /var/spool/postfix/maildrop

SOLUTION:

root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# /etc/init.d/postfix stop
root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# killall -9 postdrop
root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# chgrp -R postdrop /var/spool/postfix/public
root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# chgrp -R postdrop /var/spool/postfix/maildrop/
root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# postfix check
root@gandalf:/var/spool/postfix# postfix reload

Nice alternative to Picasa

I was browsing the web, looking for some iphone stuff, when I came across a website which offers a image managing program similar to Google Picasa and ACDSee.
The clue of this program is that you can browseyour image collection like you can do it on your iphone:

Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address – Apache – HTTPD Error

I was getting the following error on one my servers, after updating apache2 and php5

 Starting web server (apache2)...(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
failed!

This is what I did to fix the problem

netstat -lnp | grep '80'#output
tcp6       0      0 :::80                   :::*                    LISTEN     18712/apache2

In my case the output showed that apache2 was already using the port, although no sites was working and it was not even possible to stop the apache2 daemon. I ran the following to learn more

ps 18712
PID TTY      STAT   TIME COMMAND
18712 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start

I killed the apache2 process, which was blocking everything

kill 19712

and restarted apache

/etc/init.d/apache start

and everything was working fine again. Hopefully this is useful for someone..

ZooomrRSS-plugin updated

After some days, it seems that the guys over at zooomr.com have fixed there problems with the rss feed. I updated my zooomrRSS plugin, so now it works again.
If you’re using it already, you only have to overwrite the existing file and do not need the change the configuration. If this is the first time you’re using it, please have a look at the configuration page here: http://inmyplace.info/2006/09/02/my-zooomrrss-plugin-a-first-release/

Problems with the zooomr RSS feed

As someone wrote me today, my zooomrRSS plugin is not working anymore. I did a quick check, and noticed that the guys over at zooomr.com did some changes to the feed and is not displaying any item anymore. I adapted the plugin, as soon as they fix the problems with the feed I’ll update the plugin and release it here.

So stay tuned, hopefully they get it fixed a.s.a.p

First open source phone released

Openmoko announced today the launch of the first phone based on the open source environment “openmoko”. The phone has a bit of a “iphone” look, has a very appealing design and the price is quite competitive. There are 2 versions of this phone: a basic package for 300 US$, where you get the phone, a 512MB Micro SD card, a stylus, a battery and a pouch, while the advanced version, on the market for 450 US$ gives you all the things the basic version has, plus a second Micro SD card, a second battery and a lot of stuff to “mod” your phone.
The phone is GSM only, has an integrated GPS-chip, but lacks of an integrated WiFi module, which will be integrated in a future version which is planned for this autumn. The phone has a bright 640x480px display, usable with the stylus or your fingers.

I really like the design, but for the lack of connectivity I think I will keep my Blackberry for a while and wait for the second Openmoko series which is due in late autumn, hoping that they’ll integrate WiFi and UMTS

An amazing new search engine

I was surfing on http://digg.com today, when I found an amazing new search engine. It’s totally different from what you know, a kind of “human to computer to human search engine”. It’s definitely not designed for the everyday use, but a great fun to play around with.
The site is called “Ms. Dewey”, and here is the link: http://www.msdewey.com/ The site takes the first time really long to load, but it’s really worth watching it.
