As a wordpress addicted, I’m regularly following a few websites to stay uptodate with the latest development news, new how-to’s and to get new inspirations. With this post I want to share the sites I follow, I hope this might be useful for someone to get inspired. Some of the sites are wordpress-only related, some cover many other website design & coding topics as well. The sites are in no particular order, so be sure to read through the whole article to not miss one of this great resources.

WpRecipes

A great source for code snippets, plugin suggestions and theme development information. The information on the site are presented in a very clean mode, and the ideas are really useful

Cats who Code

Great source of inspiration and code examples.

WordPress Codex

The Codex is the basis for every wordpress research. I sometimes call it the “php manual” for wordpress, every function is very well documented and a great ressource for developer.

For the lose

Not onlytutorials for wordpress, but for graphic desgin as well. Some great tutorials which are very well explained.

WordPress TV

Some great wordpress screencasts, from theme development to “how to use the 123 plugin”. Definitely worth to checkout if you are a beginner and diving into wordpress.

Wp Beginner

Great ressources, good tutorials, a site which I found only recently. Definitely a great bookmark!

WPCandy

WPCandy offer great tutorials for some “uncommon” wordpress uses, such as using it as a CMS, a freelancing platform and so on. One of the most popular wordpress sites.

WPEngineer

Similar to Wprecipes, they offer some great tutorials.

I often need photos for websites or other work, and I have quite a nice list of websites which I normally use first to find a decent image. All of them listed here offer free (no cost) stock images, so check them out if you need some photos. They are listed alphabetically, so it doesn’t mean the first entry is my preferred.

Deviantart

Some great photography (especially if you are looking for digital enhanced images) can be found on deviantart.com

Everystockphoto

This is actually just a search engine for other stock photography sites, but the results are very impressive!

Freepixels

Freepixels offers high quality stock photos.

Freerangestock

You have to register to download images. Photos are all high quality, and if you decide to publish your photos on freerangestock you get a part of the ad revenue!

Geekphilosopher

No registration, good photo quality, and a nice category system. Easy to find images what you are looking for.

Gillesgonthier

Some really stunning insect images, not very much of them, but definitely worth a look.

Imagetemple

Some really nice stock photos, but not very often updated.

Microshots

As imagetemple, some really nice stock photos, but it seems not updated recently.

Openphoto

A sort of community, there is no need of registration for downloading photos, but if you want to upload them. Quiet good quality images.

Photorogue

A really interesting concept: Actually, they ask you which images you want, and then they start a sort of a contest asking people to upload images to the gallery. Definitely worth a look!

Photoshoptalent

Often updated, some really really stunning photos, together with sxc my favourite free stock photo site.

Stockcache

Some good photos, but nearly one year ago since the last update.

Stockvault

A bautiful site, really stunning photos, a vibrant community, often updated. A great site.

Sxc

A great place to find high quality stock photos, all photos are reviewed before published, to download photos in high quality you have to register for free. Probably my favourite.

Unprofound

On unprofound you search images by colour, some great photos, updated regullarly.

Openmoko announced today the launch of the first phone based on the open source environment “openmoko”. The phone has a bit of a “iphone” look, has a very appealing design and the price is quite competitive. There are 2 versions of this phone: a basic package for 300 US$, where you get the phone, a 512MB Micro SD card, a stylus, a battery and a pouch, while the advanced version, on the market for 450 US$ gives you all the things the basic version has, plus a second Micro SD card, a second battery and a lot of stuff to “mod” your phone.
The phone is GSM only, has an integrated GPS-chip, but lacks of an integrated WiFi module, which will be integrated in a future version which is planned for this autumn. The phone has a bright 640x480px display, usable with the stylus or your fingers.

Here a few pictures:

I really like the design, but for the lack of connectivity I think I will keep my Blackberry for a while and wait for the second Openmoko series which is due in late autumn, hoping that they’ll integrate WiFi and UMTS

The site is called “Ms. Dewey”, and here is the link: http://www.msdewey.com/ The site takes the first time really long to load, but it’s really worth watching it.

There are probably more then 1,000 plugins avaliable for wordpress, and some of them have to be good. But how to determine which one you need for your blog? There are a lot of “best wordpress plugins” out there, so this list isn’t intended to be a list with the “best” plugins, but I show you here the plugins I use on all my blogs and are essential in my eyes. So, let’s get started:

Akismet >> The most common spam fighter plugin. It comes already shipped with wordpress, you just have to get your API-key on wordpress.com and you’re done. This plugins works great for my sites, on some of them I get more them 200 comment spam a day, and just imagine how much time you save by turning this plugin on and not have to go to such a lot of comments to find a few good ones.

Digg This Reloaded >> This simple plugin adds a “Digg this” button/link to the post. Easy configuration, no need to edit the theme files. This plugin has to be on my list, I’m a “digg” addicted!

Feedburner Feed Replacement >> This plugin forwards all feed traffic to feedburner.com, where you can get a lot of statistic about your feed readers. A plugin for a statistic addicted like me.

Google XML Sitempaps >> This plugin creates a sitempas.org compliant sitemap of your whole wordpress site. Sitemaps are supported by Google, MSN Live Search and Yahoo and one of the key factors to get traffic from search engines to your sites. This plugin is pretty straightforward to use, nearly no configuration needed, the sitemaps are generated on the fly.

Google Analyticator >> A simple plugin which adds the needed javascript code for the google analytics statistic tracking service. Nice configuration page, you just have to copy and paste yout Analytics UID and your pages are ready to be analized.

Installer >> This is not a very famous plugin, but I love it so much. This is a one click installer plugin for plugins and themes, sounds a bit confusing, but the usage is so straightforward that you can’t do wrong. And the best is, you can search right from your plugins page on wp-plugins.net for new plugins and install them with one click! And a great (but yet not much useful option) is the “Update plugin” option, which installs updates for your plugin if you’ve them installed using Installer. Obviously, always if the plugin author is using some syntax definition in there plugin description.

Related Posts >> This plugin can show related posts for the post entry you’re reading. It’s using a keyword list to find related entries. It seems that the developer is not longer supporting this plugin.

Sidebar Widgets >> If you’re using a widget enabled theme, then you definitely want this plugin. This plugin adds the “Sidebar Widgets” option under the Presentation menu where you can drag and drop your sidebar(s).

Tags in the head >> A simple plugin to use UTW tags as meta keyword to get some more search engine friendly posts.

the_excerpt Reloaded >> When a post does not contain an excerpt, this plugin displays the content of the post, which can be customized on the length and filtering type. You must call the function in your theme, so this plugin requires a bit of modification of your theme file.

Tidy Up >> This plugin runs a HTML Tidy on all of your posts and comments. You need this plugin, if you want to create XHTML complaint web sites. A good administration web page, but not always that easy to use.

Ultimate Tag Warrior >> A must have plugin. Tag your posts, create tag clouds, create links to flickr, technorati and a lot more. This plugin is so easy to use, and so much worth. You can’t run a blog without this plugin.

WP-PostViews >> Enables you to display how many times a post had been viewed. A nice gimmick.

Youtube >> A sma ll plugin which adds a filter for displaying youtube videos in your posts.

zooomr_RSS >> Well, this is the plugin I created for displaying photos from a zooomr rss feed. It is based on the flickrRSS plugin, similar option page, and if you’ve a widget enabled site you can set it up even without the need of modifying your theme files.

Well, this list is not intended to present the best wordpress plugins, but imho some of the most useful ones. If you’ve any suggestions, if you like some (other) plugins, just leave a reply here and write why you like them. I hope to hear from you

Grisoft AVG Free Edition

Herz, was willst du mehr?

Well, before starting I’ve to say how I started using zooomr. I had a flickr pro account, was quite happy, but didn’t understand why I had to pay 25 US$ for a service which is fairly slow, sometimes buggy and not always easy to use. After my pro account expired, I found out, that of my more tham 1,000 photos only the last 200 are still available, if I want to get access again to the other ones, I have to re-sign up for a pro account. I was not amused. So, I started a few searches on google and found two options which interested me: 23hq and zooomr . So, 23hq seemed to be really interesting to me for the fact, that the company is located in Europe, and some speedtests I made really surprised me. Also the menu structure is fairly intuitive, the organizing of photos in albums is easy and the other features seemed interesting as well. And, for an account with unlimited(!) space for photos they ask only 29 Euros/year. I signed up for a free account, and then I found zooomr. I just started using 23hq, when I found out, that the guys at zooomr are giving away free pro accounts for bloggers. Hey, I sad to myself, why not trying them out, some features listed on there homepage seem to be intersting. So, I’m a zooomr pro now, and after using the service for several days, uploading about 500 photos, here a short review. Lets start with what I like and what I don’t like. I like:

the web uploading interface is easy to use

although I heard bad things about speed problems, I’ve to say, I didn’t have any problems with slow page loadings ecc.

the geotagging of the photos is great! Guys, I love you for that!

the organizing of the photos in smartsets is different at the beginning, but once you know how to use it, it’s very useful

the trackback feature is intersting. That what I really missed at flickr.

people can be added to the photos. So you can build up a social network

you can use your google account to login (or you create an openid, which you can use for other services as well)

I don’t like:

they don’t have an api (well, I’ve to say, the api should be on the way, Kris wrote that in an email, after I requested an api-key)

they only have a web interface where you can upload photos, no desktop application or other way of uploading photos (if they get the api running, then this should change quickly)

you can’t add notes to the photos (I, as an old flickr user, really like that)

you can’t create specific photosets with selected photos only (the smartsets are always created based on certain rules, so for example, it’s hard, if not to say impossible, to create a photoset with your favourite pictures)

you can’t have a favourite photo collection (I really miss that!!!)

they don’t have a community system, there are no groups, they don’t even have a support forum (well, they have a blog)

I found some articles on the web, where they say that zooomr is planning to charge about 20US$/year for 2.5GB transfer volume per month. So, if I had to choose a paid service already now, I think my choice would have been 23hq, more or less same features as flickr, a lot faster page loadings then flickr, and unlimited photo hosting. The lack of geotagging wouldn’t have been a problem for me. Don’t get me wrong, zooomr is interesting, and for sure I keep following what they’re doing. But there are other things which made me confuse: Guy’s you’re copying flickr, even your logo. You’re trying to do it as flickr-like as possible, but the lack of some so muched love features won’t help you to get flickr users like me to use your service. And, what’s disturbing me most, is the fact, that I don’t know how zooomr is going on. When do they bring new features? When do they start to charge for the accounts and how much? When is the api finally coming? For a lot of flickr users out there, the obvious answer and my recommandation at this time is: stick with flickr. For myself I keep trying out zooomr, for the fact that I don’t like that you can’t access your photos if you don’t renew your membership with flickr and that zooomr is still free. If they start to charge for the accounts, without integrating new (old?) features, I’m off to 23hq.
